Exploring Technology & Entrepreneurship

Australia in Space Queensland Event

The Queensland Technology and METS Showcase Event this week, organised and facilitated by Australia in Space brought together industry, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

Throughout the event we gained valuable insights into the progress of robotics and autonomous systems, and how technology is shaping opportunities in the METS and Space sectors. Speakers included Dr. Sue Keay (BHP Robotics Technology Lead), Dr. Navinda Kottege (Robotics and Computer Vision Research Director, DATA61), Chris Cubbage (Australia in Space).

The event, sponsored by Atomic Sky’s QuantumTX program, also showcased a QuantumTX Queensland participant pitch session showcasing businesses that are scaling rapidly.

- Outer Loop Engineering: Dr. Joni Sytsma, CEO (providing advanced machine control for aerospace vehicles. Their cutting-edge control systems guide rockets, supporting the growing Australian developmental rocket industry)

- Hindsite: Liam Scanlan, CEO and Founder (developing advanced technologies for remote sensing and data analytics in the space industry. Their innovative solutions enable improved decision-making and data-driven insights for various space-related applications)

- Freelance Robotics: Amanda White, CEO and Founder (developing robotics solutions for space exploration. Freelance Robotics specializes in versatile and adaptable robotic systems, designed to tackle the challenges of space missions efficiently).

Events like this showcase facilitate cross-sector collaboration which is essential to scaling innovation rapidly. At Outer Loop Engineering we focus on advanced missile guidance systems, which are essential components of modern missile technology to maximise accuracy and effectiveness. In Australia, there is extremely limited expertise in this field which hampers development and Australia sovereign capability. Presenting our work to leaders from the space, resources, defence and technology industries tonight was extremely valuable.
— said Dr. Joni Sytsma, Founder & CEO of Outer Loop Engineering

Earlier in the day the QuantumTX program also conducted a tech site visit of the CSIRO technology and robotics facilities including DARPA Robot Teaming, Area Bravo Testing Facilities, and InSitu Resources Utilisation Facility.

CSIRO Technology and Robotics Test Lab

Queensland is at the forefront of driving innovation and scaling technology businesses, so it was great to help showcase some of these businesses at this event. The quality of presenters and level of networking was fantastic. Another highlight was taking the QuantumTX Cohort on a site visit through CSIRO’s ISRU Space Resources Facility and the Area Bravo Robotic Testing Facilities. CSIRO’s facilities are truly world class, and it was great to gain more of an insight into the critical work they are doing to advance Australia’s tech industry.
— said Lucy Peacey, Imvelo and QuantumTX Queensland Facilitator.

QuantumTX in Queensland is led by Atomic Sky and METS Ignited and supported by the Queensland State Government, the Australian Government and AROSE.
